Here 'Doddy' David gets to work with a tickling stick (and what looks to me like a mouthful of orange peel!)

The resemblance to Groucho Marx is so close it's frightening! For some reason, David just happened to have a false nose and moustache readily to hand!

A plant pot, a handkerchief and a dodgy red jacket is all it took to transform David into Tommy Cooper!

Will the real David van Day please stand up...? The picture above shows David as we are used to seeing him. As for the other pictures... well, they all came about after I was commissioned by Jackie magazine to do a series of features on pop stars and their hobbies. I turned up at David's house with no real idea of what his hobby might be. And I quickly got the impression that David didn't have much of an idea either....

However, he's obviously a quick thinker. In a flash he decided that his hobby was impersonating people. "OK," I said, "Sounds fine by me. So, who do you impersonate?"

A quick dash around the house soon turned up a fluffy dusting brush. "Well, that's a Ken Dodd tickling stick, isn't it!"

"Yup, David! Sounds fine to me!"

And a plant pot. "Well, that's a fez like Tommy Cooper, isn't it!"

"Great, David! Sounds fine to me!"

Anyway, we'd soon gathered together enough bits and bobs to do Ken Dodd, Groucho Marx, Tommy Cooper and Benny Hill. All in all, a pretty daft idea for some pretty daft photos. Then again, that's what pop stardom is all about, isn't it...?

A shovel, a silly hat and hey presto! It's Benny Hill!

Dollar was a very popular duo back in the early '80s. The fluffy peroxide blonde electro-pop twosome of David van Day and Thereza Bazar had hit after hit including Mirror Mirror, Give Me Back My Heart and Videotheque. In recent years David has toured with his version of Bucks Fizz and he and Thereza took Dollar on the road in a quest to be 'Reborn in the USA'. The photographs on this page date from 1983.
