Visit The 80s Empire

I had lunch with Adam (at his expense, bless him!) at Odettes restaurant in Primrose Hill, North London, one hot, bright day in the summer of 1984. It was one of those occasions that would have been perfect if we could have just sat there chatting instead of having to do an interview. Oh well, I can't complain. It was a very pleasant lunch.
Name: Stuart Leslie Goddard
Date of Birth: 3rd November 1954
Place of Birth: London
Previous jobs: Plasterer's labourer, groundsman, I did various supermarket jobs - weekend jobs to buy guitars and the like.
Phobias: Business meetings.
Why did you get rid of the Prince Charming look so quickly? I think I rushed into that look. It didn't really suit me. I couldn't even turny my head around with that collar on.
What's your most tasteless possession? I collect really naff post cards and I also like sending them - porpoises, donkeys wearing straw hats and smoking pipes, kids eating bananas. I love a bit of Kitsch.
Best thing about you? I turn up on time.
Worst thing about you? I don't tolerate Flakes - that is, the chocolate-bar type of person who'll promise you the earth and then all those promises will crumble into pieces.
What is the ambition that you are least likely to fulfil? As soon as you recognise your ambitions it is possible to fulfil them. I know that I'm never going to be 6 foot tall and naturally blond. Apart from that, I'm willing to have a go at just about anything.
Who would you like to throw a custard pie at? Clive James and Chris Tarrant.
Have you ever appeared nude in public? No. There was a lot of fuss when 'Strip' and the video that went with it were banned. But I only stripped down to a pair of satin shorts. You should always retain a little bit of secrecy.
What's the most insulting thing that's been written about you? I could write a book about that. There are so many. In 1979 I was described as 'the man who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory'. Then, in 1981 I had seven singles in the Top 40.
Which record makes you happy? Any T. Rex record. I love Glam rock. Marc Bolan and T. Rex were Glam at its best.
Which record makes you sad? Lovely Day by Bill Withers. I've never really made any sad records myself. Well, I'm a bit sad that some of them weren't better - but that's a different matter...
Which is your favourite Adam Ant record? Dog Eat Dog - followed by Kings Of The Wild Frontier and Apollo 9.
What will you be doing when you are 65? I'd like to be working but, who knows, I may just be gnashing my gums?
